Anyone seen this yet? If so, reviews? I might check it out this weekend over at Kendall. All you white kids look alike when you're still covered in baby fat, so I was getting bored with the non-stop WASP parade.

I ain't really into Pol Pot, either. That said, The Killing Fields was still a good movie. All you white kids look alike when you're still covered in baby fat, so I was getting bored with the non-stop WASP parade.

Thompson's period of really good writing is relatively short compared to his overall output-
Hells Angels through Fear and Loathing on the '72 Campaign trail.

Kingdom of Fear was pretty good too, but that's kind of a memoir. And Song of the Sausage Creature, a motorcycle review written in the early 90s? was a good read too.

Most of his political writing is simply too grounded in the contemporary to be of much interest today- I didn't live through the Nixon years, for example, so I don't have the right context to read that in.
The Rum Diary is a pretty bland hemingway-aping novel, theres a reason it wasn't published until he was already famous..

But again, Hells Angels is a fascination study, the Vegas book is interesting if you consider it as attempted gonzo journalism rather than as a novel/road trip/whatever.
The 72 campaign trail is really interesting too, its' been a while and I'm blanking on why exactly but I remember it as a good read..dongpincher 1000

the killing fields is indeed an awesome movie, and i do have some interest in pol pot though as far as i know there isn't any good/definitive biography of him

i dunno danny, i liked The Great Shark Hunt about the Nixon election. I thought it was interesting because it shows how little most people knew then about the kinds of marketing that go into a presidential campaign--he gets really (and correctly, think) livid at a lot of the things that candidates do on the stump that now we've sort of all become apologists for.Geryon was a monster everything about him was red.

I agree with dannyrocks on the quality/quantity ratio in thompson's writing. I think part of the problem is that the personalty/lifestlye cult that has grown up around him tends to obscure the writing itself.Troglodytarum is latin for troll

I mean, you're not wrong about TGSH, but its still very much rooted in it's time- it can be difficult to get into without having some knowledge of that campaign going in.

    Which isn't a flaw, just a disclaimer.dongpincher 1000

...as has happened with most beat generation writers, and sartre, and, in spite of pynchon's reclusion an anti-persona lure has built up. don dellilo managed to do something of what pynchon did with reclusion but not allow a lure to build up by occasionally making appearances.
