Damn dude. They're everywhere. What's the deal with all this focus on people riding through 4-way crosswalks?I have DTF pants. They're crotchless. -surprisefries

I dunno, especially at that intersection where it's so much safer to do that. And there was not a single ped anywhere in the intersection.

It was kind of hilarious though, dude was actually hiding behind a tree.DFL and DTF :D:D:D:D

Ugh, this is where I get annoyed about the simplistic "bikes are vehicles" mentality. Bikes are hybrids between pedestrians and vehicles, so should have the advantages of a pedestrian at crosswalks, as well as the rights and responsibilities of a vehicle when in the roads.Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)

I did this last week by Porter, and was going about 2mph when I did it. Some ped started having an aneurism that I was running a red light, and yelling at me. I responded in the only way I knew how; I started to loudly sing Judas Priest to him...

I asked a cop about this. So apparently the governor started some pedestrian safety initiative, and one of the focuses is on cyclists running reds. It's pretty bullshit, if you ask me, that they would care for peds before cyclists. We have to be on the road with thousand pound + death boxes while peds have to deal with what, cracks and dog shit on the sidewalk? Fuck that. I really doubt that transit by foot does much, since those people are probably walking b/c their destination is too close to drive/not worth dealing with PT.

To be fair, the sidewalks in a lot of places around here are shit, maybe they mean they'll bring everything up to code so that people with disabilities aren't forced to use their chairs on the street because the sidewalks are impassable?

Targeting cyclists is incredibly misguided, why aren't they trying to limit the number of cars, or even bothering to cite drivers for recklessness and running lights?"life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

I yelled at a woman who slowly drove through a red this morning while drinking her iced coffee. She had a handicapped placard on her mirror, and ran the red just to get stuck at the opposite side of the intersection with the back half of her car sticking out in to the road.

"RED MEANS STOP" wasn't my wittiest remark, but I tried?I have DTF pants. They're crotchless. -surprisefries

SF Examiner:But another word for exotic is rare. Bicyclists just don’t hit people very often; according to The City’s Department of Public Health, cars hit people 811 times in 2010, while bicyclists hit people just 18 times. And when they do, they don’t have the momentum to do the same level of damage.

after getting pulled over the other morning on webster in union sq (by the cop behind a tree) I have started GoPro-ing my commute in hope that I will get pulled over again and this time be able to record the cars running the red while a cop talks to me (i counted two last time)...

"Forty cyclists were cited for infractions, including red light violations, illegal turns, and not signaling, when police conducted a bicycle safety and enforcement operation near Commonwealth and Massachusetts avenues."

Not signalling? That's a new one I think? And illegal turns (presumably making a left when a sign tells vehicles not to).

    Cops cite 40 cyclists

This is fucking stupid. Coverage like this makes cyclists seem like scofflaws and dangers.

Write a similar story about a traffic stop that pulls (actual) vehicles over for running late yellows/reds, right on reds, speeding, not signaling, lane changing in an intersection, and blocking the box, and you'd have 40 citations in 15 minutes.I have DTF pants. They're crotchless. -surprisefries
  12.
but but During the two operations, police also gave riders dozens of free helmets and bicycle lights donated by the university.

I thought part of the bike bill was that you don't have to signal if it's unsafe to take a hand off the handlebars. I guess you'd have to explicitly state that to defend yourself though.DFL and DTF :D:D:D:D

Huh, it's almost like cops don't know what they're doing and don't bother to know real laws, they just target whatever demographic they don't like.

Yesterday I was riding down Comm into Kenmore. There were about 15 cops at the BU bridge, flagging down cyclists and giving out helmets. I wasn't wearing mine (POO POO!) so one waved me over. I rolled up and smiled and he says
"You know how many people were killed last year on bikes?"
    "By cars? Yeah, five."
    "Uhh..yeah that's right."
"I'm leaving work my helmets at home. I appreciate the concern."
    "You a courier?"

I wanna get pulled over and let them know how many times a day I'm nearly killed by reckless drivers, and ask why they aren't doing more to discourage driving in a geographically small city that has excellent public transit infrastructure.

Also, this article is disgusting. "Police say they found the majority of the fatal crashes were a result of bicyclist error." Not that semis and buses have massive visibility issues, they're drivers are often undertrained and overworked, and that Boston's narrow roads and turns that weren't designed to accommodate these vehicles could have significantly contributed to these situations. Nope."life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

I also think that it's interesting that they fail to mention that the NUMBER ONE BEHAVIORAL FACTOR in BPD's report for cyclist crashes was "Driver Did Not See Bicyclist." Totally unbiased reporting, as usual. Also, I have a hard time seeing why "bicyclist speeding" is even a category...and cyclists are cited more for that than drivers are. Ludicrous.1) Stop watching the donkey porn.
