fitchburg is a kick in the dick. rollstone hill, granite street, south street by gamache's cyclery. i don't remember most of the street names anymore, but i have tackled a good deal of them with 48x17.

don't go down those hills without a brake though. its ok if there weren't any cars, but motherfuckers in fitchburg will run you off the road.

also, if you're asking because you wanna film MASH, CENTRAL MA, please don't. just.... just don't.flip mode. flip mode is the greatest.

I dunno if this was mentioned (I'm lazy), but there's a steep hill on Beacon immediately before Coolidge Corner. Unfortunately it's a pretty high traffic area.

Honestly, if people can ride fixed in SF, I don't think we can find any unrideable hills in Boston.Ella: Not that I would EVER even THINK of taking the T (mainly because my penis is too large to fit in it)

9m gain over ~230m = 3.9% grade. although if you stop just short of the park entrance on the left, it's the same gain over 172m, resulting in a 5.2% grade.

    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2378185

this is short, but steeep: 13m rise over 107m = 12.15% grade.

    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2378195

this is rather long, so broken down into pieces:
segment between Columbus and Centre: 12m gain over 114m = 10.5% grade
segment between Centre and Highland: 7m gain over 240m = 3% grade
total (from Columbus to Highland): 19m gain over 354m = 5.4% grade~(..,)~ (oYo) make whoopee not war (oYo) ~(..,)~

^ for reference to some "training" hills in the metro area:

    • the Arlington water tower climb (my hill of choice) is 1 mile long (from where Venner Rd meets Pleasant St and the on-ramp to Rt 2), with an average grade of 6.2%.

    • Summit Ave (from Beacon St to the park entrance) is an 8.8% grade climb, and is 0.4 miles long.

    • this Blue Hill route (although i don't know if the road on the map is an actual road) is 0.87 miles long with an average grade of 9%.

and to illustrate why the pros are pros: the Alpe d'Huez climb has an average grade of 7.9% over 13.8 km (8.6 miles)! and during the tour (at least this past 2008 tour), that's after having ridden about 120 miles in the mountains just prior.~(..,)~ (oYo) make whoopee not war (oYo) ~(..,)~
