    Received the following email:
Dear friends, cyclists, “greenies” and just general health nuts-

A friend of mine is spearheading an effort to build a Velodrome in the Boston area, and the people backing this effort have set what they consider a “high number of returned surveys” at 100 by end of the weekend.

I am confident we can get well over 1000 by Monday AM and am counting on YOU to help spread the news and get people to fill out the survey, which can be found here:

I'm going to sticky this for a few days, because I think it's an incredible opportunity to show investors (yes, these people do have investors lined up already) that the cycling community can get beyond the pessimism and contribute to something. I took the survey a week ago, and it takes about 5 minutes if you're thoughtful about it. Do it!Word nerd

By the way, for those of you who are cracking jokes about having bike polo courts in the middle, etc., make the suggestion on the survey! The people involved are very tied into the messenger and urban cycling community, which is why they're trying to build it here. They're doing the survey to find ways to maximize attendance. If that means polo, or whatever, I'm sure they'd be open to the idea. And there are definitely open-ended questions, which give you space to make those kinds of suggestions. The idea here is to be inclusionary. Don't forgo filling out the survey because you're not a racer. There are questions aimed at spectators and alternative uses for the space. If you have an idea, just speak up!Word nerd

South Station>Bus Terminal>Platform A $10ish several buses to and from Londonderry 5 days a week ..Exit 4 and 5; 5 is closer to the track but 4 is also an easy ride.

edit: said it before but I grew up in londonderry and am currently there/here. lowell to lderry on mammoth road is nothing- probably 15-20m to get to the track. the track is 5ish miles north of the center of londonderry and is juuussttt almost in manchester but manchester sucks so who caresenjoy two cosmetics

Really? I thought it was closer to 20... Plus I live in Lawrence which would add an extra ten miles. I get the feeling that after riding 15-20 miles up and down hills I wouldn't be in the best shape to do anything on the track. (but maybe I'm just being a wimp =S)

I dunno if this route would be the nicest ride, but it shouldn't take too much out of you. It'd probably make a nice light warmup to the track anyway.

I'm thinking of riding to Londonderry at some point this summer, but I don't have a track bike. How much are rentals there?http://www.fanfiction.net/s/800170/1/EVANGELION_NEXUS

16 miles isn't that bad, I expected it to be more. Rt 28 has a big hill in methuen, but after that is fairly easy, albeit heavily trafficked. Shit, maybe I should try going to the track... Now I just need a little bit of income to afford the fees and maybe a rental since all I have is a janky conversion.

Hey yall, someone from NEBC sent this out... (this survey is different than the one that came out 5 years ago). Don't sell your track bikes quite yet!

    Hello,

We are part of the group that studying the feasibility of hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics in Boston. As you may know, in June the United States Olympic Committee narrowed the field of U.S. candidate host cities to four: Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. are the U.S. finalists.

A large part of the feasibility work involves detailed consideration of the post-Olympic legacy use of each permanent venue that would be constructed for Olympic purposes. We are currently studying the potential post-Olympic usage of an indoor velodrome facility. As part of this study, we have assembled a consumer survey targeted at cyclists who could be potential users of the velodrome after the Olympics. The link that follows will lead you to a survey that will include questions on how much you might use the facility, your willingness-to-pay, what services you would like to see at the facility, etc. We highly value your opinion as we consider the potential utility for a state-of-the-art indoor velodrome in the Boston area. We hope that you will find time to complete this online survey to help us with our study. We look forward to hearing your responses.

The survey can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/bostonvelodrome

    Many thanks,

    Boston 2024 Partnership

Having lived in Boston, San Fran, and DC, they are all terrible venues for the Olympics. Never lived in LA so I can't comment. These are like 4 of the highest property value areas in the country.

The only feasible way I could see doing it in Boston is if most of the vents were held at Foxboro. There's a commuter rail line that runs right there that could be used to ferry athletes from the city. Maybe infrastructure wise we could get a line running between North Station and South Station to have an easy link from TD Garden to an Olympic village in Foxboro. And I think Bob Kraft has enough land to build another stadium.A few spokes shy of a wheel.

Survey filled. Think of it as good reason to take a 3-week vacation to anywhere-but-Boston.

EDIT, re: the abandoned Olympic sites: Also, it seems like the winter Olympics involves far more single-purpose venues than summer Olympics. Though I could be wrong.

EDIT AGAIN: I forgot about all those dumb rowing events with the special water-park courses. Goddamn the Olympics are hella stupid.Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)
