Just posting this up to gauge interest.

It looks like I'm going to be involved in organizing a city-wide dodgeball tournament to raise money and awareness to fight childhood pneumonia, which currently kills 1.8 million (mostly poor, mostly "3rd world") children per year. The stats right now are pretty bleak, but there is good news. Although pneumonia currently receives the least amount of funding out of all the major global killers of children, there is momentum building right now to get this placed higher on the global health agenda. The first ever World Pneumonia Day happened 3 weeks ago on November 2, and advocacy and research organizations are trying to capitalize on this momentum. I've been in contact with someone from the Best Shot Foundation (www.best-shot.org), and they're organizing dodgeball tournaments this spring in 16 cities, with 32 teams to compete in each. Each team will be responsible for raising at least $300 and will have a max of 15 people playing. They're calling it "Pnock Out Pneumonia." (www.pnock.org)

The reason I'm posting this here:
I think bostonfixed should field a team.

A few reasons came to mind:
    1) It'd be fun to play dodgeball.
    2) We could do fun stuff to raise the money, and I'm sure we could raise well beyond the $300 minimum.
    3) It could be a cool opportunity to raise the profile of cyclists in the city. The other teams would most likely be from schools and corporations, and I think we'd really stand out. It could be a unique opportunity to rep cycling in our city and show that we care about things that have nothing to do with bike lanes and traffic laws.
    4) Again, I think it'd be fun as hell.

Details are still being worked out, but if I'm actually going to be helping to coordinate the tournament for the entire city, doing this would require someone from bf stepping up to organize the team (with lots of support, of course.) If you'd be at all interested in participating in something like this, let me know. And if you have any suggestions or ideas, I'd really like to hear them. I haven't been on here for very long, but I really dig you guys and I think this could be an opportunity to do something neat- something good for us, good for the city, and good for 1.8 million kids who die from an easily treatable disease.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and congratulations again to Alex, Zach, and Elinor for rocking shit hardcore tonight at Middlesex. We'll get you a cat, don't worry -t-honks

Sweet. It sounds like there may be some legit interest.

I think kits for uniforms are a great idea. Serious question: What do you think of trying to find sponsorship?

Next question: Is there anyone who would want to take the lead in organizing the bostonfixed team?
In other words, you work on getting the hipsters together, and I work on getting cabbies to field a team. We'll get you a cat, don't worry -t-honks

Fuck yes, count me in. I'd also be down to help with organizing; I have some experience with putting together fundraisers, and have been playing dodgeball since I had legs that kicked effectively. Whisper at me with more info, Joe!

(kick/dodgeball, close enough, or maybe not. either way, enjoy:)

*BUMP* Hey all! Just wanted to touch base, and remind you all that this is still in fact happening. I, your recently appointed team captain, and Joe, head organizer extraordinaire, had a meeting today and discussed some logistics.

    Here's some key points:

-The actual date/location of the tournament itself is still being decided, but think March/April.
-We're in contact with Superb, and it looks like they might be sponsoring us. We'll know soon, whether this will just be in the form of kits, or more extensively, in the form of monays.
-Reminder: As a team, we need 15 players, and to raise at least $300. Even if you are not physically able to play, be aware that there are still positions on the team, aka, sexay water boy and such, for you to fill. You do not need to be in the line of fire dodging balls of death in order to be a part of this. (However, we'd obviously certainly like you to be.)
-For a fundraiser, we're thinking about holding an evening of coldsprints, possibly over at Middlesex. This would be super fun, and way better than asking you all to put down money, am I right? However, I'm totally open to ideas regarding other ways to raise funds; any feedback is very welcome and appreciated!

I'd really like to get an approximate head count, and re-gauge interest. If you're down, please whisper me your email, and I'll put you on the list. I figured this would be a better way to keep everyone in the loop as things comes together, instead of relying on people to check the board. Please feel free to get in touch regarding any concerns, questions, or suggestions.

Deets are forthcoming as soon as I have them. I'm banging away at BU to let us use the facilities right now. If we get lucky, it will be on a Saturday in April, and it will run from 3pm-11pm or so, with an afterparty somewhere... Whisper Corinna your info if you want to stay in the email loop (even if you can't commit just yet), and we'll be posting and emailing updates as soon as we have good news! We'll get you a cat, don't worry -t-honks

    Thanks for the bump.

I'm sad to report that this event got canceled. They were able to do it in other cities, but I couldn't pull it off here this year for a variety of reasons. I'm really really disappointed, but it was unavoidable.

If anyone is interested in organizing it for next year, let me know and I'll put you in touch with my contact at the Best Shot Foundation. If I'm still in Boston next year, you can count me in.We'll get you a cat, don't worry -t-honks
