The format of Boldsprints right now is shite, and Goodlife has a lot of puke to clean out of their bathrooms because of it. It's also really discouraging for new/non-bike people to race, so they pretty much come once, maybe ride, maybe don't, and never come back.

Just got an offer to DJ this event, was the first I heard of it:

    Press Release:

Cambridge, MA - On June 2, 2013, there will be a Bike Show and Market being held on MIT’s campus at 32 Albany St – near the intersection of Albany and Main Streets in Cambridge in the outdoor lot and garage. All proceeds will benefit the Sean A. Collier Memorial Fund. The event will consist of two main components: a Bike Market for the sale of bicycle-related goods from local vendors and individuals, and a Bike Show, with a number of categories for bicycle judging, such as Best Road Bike, Best Mountain Bike, People’s Choice, etc. Additionally, there will be demonstrations and sponsor booths with tips, tricks, and trinkets. Revenue for the fundraiser comes from the following:

    * General Admission is $1 (children 12 and under are free)

    * Bike Registration is $5 (comes with commemorative token)

    * Vendor spots are $20/spot

    * Raffle is $2/ticket, 2 for $3 (50/50 and win one of two $100 Zipcar Gift Certificates)

Vendors set up at 7am; bike registration starts at 8am; general public admittance at 9am; event ends at 2pm. All enthusiasts and bike lovers alike are encouraged to come out and help judge people’s bikes, buy a part for their ride, and support two good causes. For more information and updates, please contact Eric Senzer at bikeshowmarket@gmail.com or 954 478 2423. This event is sponsored by the MIT’s Graduate Student Council Sustainability Subcommittee and Zipcar.

Hmm, though it'd be nice if they included the cyclist who was killed near that corner last year, or even the MIT scientist who was killed last fucking week. Y'know, being bike and memorial related :/

Edit: I mean, obviously, being bike-related in those cases wouldn't be tasteful, they probably wouldn't have identified as cyclists, among other reasons. It's just sad how they're so completely ignored and so immediately forgotten."life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

    Bicyclists aren't people.

That and he did sound like a decent guy, Somerville native and all. The state legislature posthumously appointed him to the SPD.

I understand what you're saying though.
  11.
Well I understand the wishes to spread the fundraising money around, but this is still a good cause.

It appears I am definitely DJing at this so I figured I would post the link here. I honestly don't really know what the whole "bike show" aspect is all about, with judging and such, not really my kind of thing, but there should be vendors with cool stuff and maybe the bike show will turn out to be fun once we see what it is, haha. But again it's for charity, only $1 to get in and should be a good time, and I'll be spinning soul 45's and representing the MIT radio station WMBR along with my pal Joanie playing new wave stuff, spread the word if you can, and if you come out please come up and say hi, I'm sure I'll be hot and bored behind the turntables :)

I really like WMBR and I want to support events that they promote. If the Sean Collier fund spreads the dough among good causes then that's something to give props to. I think, however, that "Boston Strong" is some "Never Forget" shit, which to many translates to "ALL I NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT ISLAM I LEARNED ON 9/11." It's fucking offensive. Here are a few reasons why:

-Comparing the hardships experienced by people who died and lost limbs to the hardships experienced by sports fans when their favorite team lost is fucked up.
-The implication that a city requires an enormous police presence to be strong is fucked up.
-The Islamophobia that Boston has experience because of people who consider themselves "Boston Strong" is fucked up.
-It's being used as a marketing term and huge sums of money are being made at the expense of victims which is fucked up.
-Few people in major media seem to care how strong the grieving residents of Boston are when people of color are killed in Roxbury or Dorchester and that is really fucked up.

It's an aggressive "U-S-A! U-S-A!" style chant that's often used by scary people who generally don't know much about struggle or strength.

I really liked what Joanie (who DJed this event) said about the One Fund on WMBR after the bombing. She mentioned that all this money going to such a small group of people was ludicrous. Especially when similar bombings happen elsewhere in the world on a regular basis and that other folks' need for a fund like this was so much larger than that of the Boston victims.

My not wanting to go to an event that uses this phrase (hopefully) isn't me being a whiny dick. I like small-scale markets and think that they're a step toward a sensible economy. I like bikes. I like your music. I think that we just have to be careful of the shit we say and what it means. And boy do I hope this "Boston Strong" (or BS) thing dies soon.
  14.
I appreciate your thoughtful answer, and I am not a big fan of BOSTON STRONG either (especially people using a tragic attack as some sort of reason our sports teams should win), but I think you're going way overboard with your interpretation of it's use, especially in this instance. It was some bike people working together with the MIT police to raise a meager amount of money for charity in the memory of someone who was ruthlessly murdered. To compare the use of that simple catchphrase to assaults on Islam or jingoistic madness, and to boycott the event based on it being used, seems like a ridiculously extreme over-reaction to me. But then, I was there, I DJed with Joanie, and I saw what a humble affair it was, and the sincerity of the people involved. I respect your opinion on the matter, but I find it sad that you would have turned your back on this thing over a couple of words.

And I agree with everyone, even though I posted it, that flyer is hideous.
