this is a terrible, terrible, terrible stretch of huntington, especially around rush hour. high-traffic area and no matter which direction you're riding, there's on-street parking on one side, train tracks on the other, and not much room for cars/buses to pass, especially if the E line's coming.

chris bought a new bike from around there today and was riding it around all afternoon, but it wouldn't make that much sense for him to still be in the area. that said, i hope he's safe. frankly, it was such a nice day, and a lot of people were probably riding around enjoying the weather after work. no matter who it was, this is very sad.

I just got back from the scene.
All buses and trains have stopped and have been rerouted. The police would not tell me who it was or if they were wearing a helmet.
I have pictures from the scene but I won't post them. They hadn't cleaned the blood off the street.

The bike was brown with chrome handle bars and silver quill stem. Tan wall tires.

That intersection is terrible. There's potholes and the tracks are easy to get caught in.

^then you probably know to give those buses plenty of room cause they drive like idiots. id be very interested to hear what actually happened. i think (sadly) this is probably only the beginning, as more "fair weather" cyclists hit the streets there is inevitably going to be more and more accidents like this. hopefully the city will also realize this and maybe paint on a few more bikes lanes, huntington has needed one FOREVER.RIDE METAL

larger news outlets have more to lose by breaking a story, or story details, before confirming everything with proper authorities.
they can quote it as a witness's account of what happened, but they cant report it as fact until the proper authorities have issued a statement on the record.RIDE METAL

Someone left a comment on the Globe's article here on this that's relevant. Take it with a grain of salt as it is a random internet comment, but:

This is not what happened. The accident happened right in front of my apartment and I heard from several witness about the circumstances of the tragedy. In fact, the biker had gotten stranded on the embedded street trolley tracks of the green line (their tire was stuck ). The bus had about 150 feet to react to the stuck biker while going around 30mph which is quite impossible in the oversized 39 bus. Both could do nothing about the accident, many witnesses I talked to said that there was nothing that could have been done. A tragedy.

Mass braking standards currently require a bus to be able to stop from a speed of 20mph within 40ft of where the brake is applied.

    link here

edit: What I'm trying to say it, 150ft should have been more than adequate, at least according to the state of Massachusetts.I have a two part question: 1. Why is he doing that? And 2. Should we light him on fire.

    From the Globe:
By John M. Guilfoil, Globe Staff

A bicyclist was killed after he tried to pass a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus and lost control of his bike, MBTA officials said Wednesday.

The victim, a 22-year-old man from Back Bay, was riding eastbound on Huntington Avenue near the South Huntington Avenue split around 6 p.m. when he tried to pass a Route 39 bus on the left, said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. The bicyclist lost control and fell under the moving bus, Pesaturo said.

The bus driver was identified as a 29-year-old man with about two years of experience driving for the T. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for str

I do not want to ride by there, but it's my route to school.

I'm confused on how the rear of the bus struck him though. Did it swing out after making the turn or did he fall INTO the bus?
As disgusting as it is, there was a lot of blood. The impact looked pretty bad and he must have been hit pretty hartd.

the people over at lemmingtrail are talking about going to the Mayor to have that intersection changed (raise the tracks or whatever else is possible)
i think as [part of] Boston's bicycle community we should join them, i mean because really- I'VE been caught in those tracks before and it pisses me off that someone's died due to them.
(granted it was because i was cut off by a car coming from a side street and then double parking directly in my path, not by choice to try to pass a bus, but regardless -> swerve to avoid car -> front wheel caught -> over handbars. scary as fuck.) ..some of you have seen pictures of my stupid zombie leg i had for a while..

i know i'm not the only one either; raise your hand if you've been caught in those tracks?Mattia: "I don''t usually watch porn with pickaxe, but when I do it, I make sure to be on the right website"

There was also a 6 alarm fire in Backbay that shut down the bridge to Cambridge, so all traffic was rerouted to the BU bridge.

I have been caught in those tracks and have seen numerous people get caught (and fall) there as well.

edit..didnt see tammys post..xue - Marianna can you make a Chrome extension that replaces every instance of the word
  17.
^ it was a 9 alarm fire actually.

I've gotten caught in the tracks before trying to get around someone who was parallel parking and swinging too far into the street. One of my friends knocked out his two front teeth getting caught in the tracks. And my friend's girlfriend launched herself off her cruiser getting stuck and now won't ride a bike because of it.

    Fuck the tracks.
  18.
I read two completely different stories from different news sources.

Story 1, rider tried to pass bus and lost control and fell under the bus.

Story 2, rider gets stuck in tracks, tries to remove bicycle from tracks as a bus going 30mph comes around the sharp turn and doesn't have enough time to stop once it sees the rider, somehow "impacts" the cyclist with the back of the bus.

All the witness reports seem to coincide with story number 2, however like everyone else I can't really see how it was the back end of the bus that hit him. Also why is a Bus going 30mph around a blind corner. what if it was just a car stuck in traffic sitting there? would the bus have just slammed into it? And if so it would have plainly been the buses fault for hitting the stopped car.I am Superb
