hannaelise:^ it was a 9 alarm fire actually.

I was there and they said 6 alarm, so did the BPD twitter. Maybe they updated it? IDK. Either way, traffic was terrible.

The bus looked like it had some damage on the back (on the engine vents), but that doesn't mean it was from the crash.

Really though, I think he fell under the bus. The bus's rear ended couldn't have swung out and hit him due to the nature of the turn. Unless he just got stuck in the tracks and fell into the side of the bus and subsequently hit his head on the ground, I don't believe the second story.I am Humbert outside the internet, actually.

my impression was more that the guy got stuck in the tracks and the bus was either swerving to avoid him, or the bus was pulling out of a bus stop as he was trying to pass on the left and got stuck, and as the bus swung to swerve/pull out (depending on the scenario) the cyclist got clipped by the back side of the bus and was knocked underneath.

either way, it sounds absolutely horrible and my sympathy goes out to his family and friends. it doesn't sound like either party was much at fault, it was just a treacherous intersection and terribly unfortunate timing.

Bostonbiker got an email from a witness saying it was a cream colored track bike. Looking back at Erich's post, his bike could be seen as cream colored.

The bike in Mauspad's accident picture looks much darker, though.I have DTF pants. They're crotchless. -surprisefries

just to add another story and a little incite into how much that intersection sucks: my girlfriend got stuck in the tracks last summer and wiped out. she was turning left onto south huntington, a bus was pulled over at the stop next to the gas station and pulled out into traffic as she was passing it, forcing her into the center of the street and into the tracks. she fell and bashed her knee, thankfully there wasn't any other traffic at the time. she hasn't ridden a bike since.RIDE METAL

Sparky's girlfriend crashed on the S. Huntington hill tracks just last week. Her wheel got caught and she flew off the bike. Ended up with a sprained ankle and is now in PT for an injured rotator cuff.

Says the scariest part was that cars didn't stop and kept honking at her while she was lying in the road.I have DTF pants. They're crotchless. -surprisefries

to anyone who commmutes through that intersection, heres a tip. I do that route every single day. Something ive found to be really helpful is that theres a parking lot that runs behind the apartment buildings on the last block of huntington. If youre coming down South huntington, make the last turn before the intersection and it will take you behind te buildings and dump you closer to parker hill ave. When its super busy traffic, or theres a bus unloading people at the stop, its very helpful and much safer.'Cause i always say i love you when i mean turn out the lights.

agreed, much better route riding into the city. heading out on huntginton/s.huntington is another story, i usually just take my time and avoid the tracks at all costs. if you can remove the tracks from the issue, its just another shitty intersection with traffic and pushy buses to deal with.RIDE METAL

Wish I were there to help with the ghost bike. As a suggestion, make a red sign to go with the bike that says something like "Eric Michael Hunt, struck and killed by MBTA bus on 4/7/10. He was 22." This is what they do for the NYC ghost bikes as well as the ones we had back in Fl. Let's those not in the loop know why the bike is there.

Please be safe everyone.clockwork ted: this is my favorite thread. sweet BJ alexi!

Ben and I were talking about a sign, we dont have sign making materials on hand. If anyone has something like that (and handwriting that is legible) it'd be great if you brought those along.ascott430 - "Was going to build it up into a fixed gear until I realized I'd rather spend money and time on mountain bikes."

^^I'm also concerned that it sounds like it's placing blame on the bus, which may or may not be the case. Depending on what comes out as the official account, it might be worth considering a phrasing like "killed as the result of a collision with a bus" or something to that effect.i mean that looks like a 10 cat bag, easy

when they take it down we need to put up a new one. Just be sure it's chained so it doesn't interfere with the sidewalk or anything.

Either way a sign should get posted.clockwork ted: this is my favorite thread. sweet BJ alexi!

A sign's going up no matter what with the name, date and age. The issue of contention is whether or not it should explicitly mention the MBTA bus. Not arguing, just trying to clarify 'cause I'm confused as to what everyone's down with.

This is so sad. I just passed by the aftermath of what looked like a pretty bad crash. At the intersection of Charles st. And beacon st. At the corner of the common there. Police lines around a car with it's windshield smashed in. Cannondale road Bike on the side of the road with it's front fork and wheel snapped off entirely. Looked like it was maybe a head on collision. Anyone have any more info? Thoughts are with them, hope they're allright. Stay safe everyone.

This is a terrible tragedy, my heart goes out to the friends and family of the victim. I think a ghost bike should be placed in that spot, and let me know if I can help out with that.

Also, I want to say after spending some time in NYC that there are a lot of ghost bikes that are up there permanently. Boston for some reason takes these bikes down within 1-2months and I think this is a disgrace. I think we should talk to Nicole Freedman and the Mayor about leaving ghost bikes up with plaques on them. It is a grim thing to see, but hopefully makes both cyclists and drivers pay more attention.

I agree. The reason is irrelevant. This is a memorial.

Besides, a noon update from boston.com -- here -- cites authorities as saying he tried to pass the bus on the left, lost control, and fell under.
