surprisefries:the scintilla comment was from the driver's attorney

But yeah, fuck all of this. Isn't it pretty fucking regular procedure to at least put someone involved in a DEATH on leave? At the very least?

How is it responsible journalism to ONLY QUOTE THE LAWYER OF THE PERSON WHO HAS THE MOST TO GAIN FROM LYING TO THE WORLD ABOUT THIS?

Anybody feel like staging a protest outside the law offices of this fucker? Or the sanitation company employing the driver? I am so fucking livid.Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)

1 IP! That's like protesting a city block. Nobody would have any idea who you're protesting. I guess we could hang out in the lobby with bikes and signs with his face on it until we're kicked out. I'd do it if we got enough people.

But seriously, how does a dump truck driver afford the top mob lawyer?? Hmmm...this is getting stinkier by the moment.Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)

    ugh everyone get fucked.

'At a June hearing, Representative Steven Howitt, a Seekonk Republican, said he sees the need for better protection of riders and pedestrians, but feels such a law could be unfair to motorists.

“I’m not going to generalize, but I see them [bicyclists] running stop signs, running lights, people jaywalking, people running across the street in a diagonal,” Howitt said. “How does this address the pedestrian or the bicyclist or the skateboarder who is violating the law?”'

what a shit way to end the article.

edited to add it addresses the cyclist and pedestrian by attempting to offer them protection from other road users, a large number of whom in vehicles already federally required to pass safety inspections because accidents happen. fuck off mr. congressman. You're purposefully attempting to sabotage my degree project. Thanks.
  4.
for anyone who's seen the picture of the wrecked Colnago from the truck, it doesn't seem like it was something that the guy ran into the side of the truck. That bike was FUCKED. They also found the poor dudes body like 10ft from it in the bushes or something. That seems a lot more like the bike got run the fuck over and dragged.
Also, the fact the judge said fuck-face could keep driving because of his 6 kids (stop having them first of all) but i guess it doesn't matter much that whatever family Owen McGrory had is now left without him. Good work on all parts. The system fails, once again.'Cause i always say i love you when i mean turn out the lights.
  5.
If it was a right hook he could have hit the side of the truck and still gone under the wheels. You're right, it definitely looked like a run-over and drag. And if he did hit the truck there's no way the driver could have mistaken that for a pothole.DFL and DTF :D:D:D:D
  6.
There's never a shortage of apologists ready to line up and make excuses for the driver in these situations. From the legal system to the press to just about any motorist who got mad at a cyclist once for not signaling a turn. It still manages to shock me how immediately the public dialogue becomes sympathy for the driver, while the dead cyclist is treated like an afterthought and a more a victim of their own reckless decision to ever mount a bicycle than the victim of a vehicular homicide. It's so hard not to feel rage and to feel considered a second-class citizen simply for choosing to be a cyclist every time this tragedy occurs. So frustrating. My heart goes out to the victim and thier loved ones, hopefully they will find some justice and closure in this situation - but I'm not holding my breath.

Looks like someone got hit at Bow and Summer St, but not badly. That intersection is pretty stupidly marked.DFL and DTF :D:D:D:D
  8.
That intersection sounds exactly like the one at Centre & South in JP, where cars "staying on Centre" are really making a right turn, and traffic "continuing onto South" are basically going straight and should have the right of way, yet cars making the right tend to act like and believe that they don't need to yield to bikes going straight in the bike lane. A total shitshow scenario.

got doored super hard in the bike lane on Harvard St today just south of Blanchards by some asshole who let his passenger out WHILE IN THE TRAVEL LANE in stop & go traffic... my Iro Angus may be done for (there's a weird dent in the down tube now, and I'm concerned about the notoriously flimsy Iro forks) and I ended up in the hospital getting half my body irradiated. According to witnesses, the dude opened the door about 5 feet in front of me, I screamed at him to close it as my handlebar caught the door and i went over the bars, hit the door with my feet vertical above my head, then slammed sideways into a parked car and broke out its taillight with my hip. Despite this remarkably acrobatic maneuver, I somehow didn't break any, bones which is awesome. Still can't really use my left arm due to swelling/pain, and my right hip is also similarly displeased with me. Took the cops an hour to show up to take a police report, because I'm sure as shit not letting MY insurance pay for this guy's idiocy.

in an amusing turn of events, I asked the cop to cite the driver for his passenger dooring me, and he told me that it's not a ticketable offense. I showed him Zisson's bikesafeboston website and he was like "fuck me, I didn't know any of this, you're right," so if anything at least he was educated as a result of everything/he didn't seem to mind being told he was wrong. pleasantly surprising interaction i guess?1) Stop watching the donkey porn.

Got front-ended by a driver today driving across the bike lane on his way from Mass Ave into Public Alley 905. Other than a nice bruise on my shoulder and a dent in my helmet, I seem to be OK. But Svetlana is totaled.

    Poor Svetlana.

I left three dents in his hood and a shoe print pretty high up on his windshield. I actually noticed the Answer logo on the windshield and wondered if he had had an Answer bumper sticker on the window for some time, but then realized that, no, that was my shoe print perfectly implanting itself on his windshield a few minutes earlier:

I just rolled right up there, which probably absorbed most of the impact, thankfully. At least the driver was super nice and really wanted to make sure I was OK. I already made a claim with his insurance company and filed a police report. (I conveniently had Josh Zisson's handy Accident Report Card.) The cop at the police station suggested I go to the doctor tomorrow, so I'll do that.

At least when I got home, I found that my friend had bought me a box of Giant Pocky:

He was turning into the alley in a heavily trafficked section of Mass Ave during rush hour. He says he was waiting to go but some douchebag in a red pickup truck honked at him and waved him on and yelled at him to just go, so he did, and he blames that guy for waving him on. But if he couldn't see that the bike lane was clear for himself, and had to trust someone else to do it for him, he should have just held his ground and shouldn't have gone until he could be sure that traffic was clear.::lols at Dan's great photoshopping job:: ::slowly stops laughing:: ::googles:: ::kills self:: -tinyhonkshus

Yeah, that's super dangerous. At least in New York where I learned to drive, they specifically instruct you to never wave people through, because you're probably blocking their view of the other lanes and will probably cause an accident. You're supposed to follow the rules in place and wait until it's clear."life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

hello world - I was struck by a hit and run driver in Cambridge and it was suggested to post here to try and find this lovely person. I was heading down Prospect st in Cambridge towards Central square, had a green light at Harvard street. A car coming the opposite way on prospect was stopped with its left turn signal on. it's night but I have a bright flashing front light so I assumed this person could see me and would give right of way. instead this woman makes the turn in front of me, I slam on brakes but can't stop in time. Roll over her hood and my helmet smashes her windshield, through which i see she is on her iphone. I am irate and bleeding but ok, tell her to pull over but she completes her turn and speeds off down harvard st. this was almost two hours ago.

long story short if anyone sees a blue/gray/silver station wagon with a smashed up windshield in this area please let me or Cambridge PD know. thanks.

Holy crap, that's horrible. I hope she gets found and thrown in jail.

I wouldn't be surprised if she lives in the neighborhood. I agree -- call Safelite and all the other auto glass companies right away. ALSO call all the auto insurance companies and tell them to keep an eye out for a windshield glass claim from an owner of a vehicle meeting that description, from this area (driving at that hour, I wouldn't be surprised if she lives nearby). I'd guess she's probably trying to get it repaired today, and windshields are expensive, they break all the time due to rocks and stuff, and car insurance usually replaces them with no deductible, so I would bet you she's telling her insurance it was a rock and trying to get them to cover it.::lols at Dan's great photoshopping job:: ::slowly stops laughing:: ::googles:: ::kills self:: -tinyhonkshus
  14.
Hah that would be a BIG rock. maybe a rockslide...but these are good ideas, I had visited the glass replacement places closest to the accident this morning but I'll call up glass services and insurance companies. Thanks all.

Unfortunately all I caught from the driver's story was that, of course, he didn't see her. Do those magic words somehow grant drivers immunity? They seem to think so.
