Stop laughing! I'm not kidding (about the bouts of laughter or putting myself up for mod).

In the spirit of Babyfries, here are my qualifications:

    1. At least for now I'm often around watching a 1 year old, I look at Bfixed quite a bit.
    2. I hate spam (it's amusing but annoying, stupid dredging up old threads)
    3. I fully endorse Lauren's approach to modding. Only spam killing.
    4. I obviously have no problem with people calling me out for being a jerk.
    5. I have modded before, not here obviously.
    6. I live in Boston.
    7. Did I mention I look at Bfixed a lot? It's a disease.
    8. Despite the constant changing of usernames I have been here awhile.

    Readily apparent downsides:

    1. I obviously have no problem being a jerk.
    2. There are way nicer people on the forum.
    3. Fair chance I might move next year, but obviously I could just stand aside at that point.
    4. My baby sleeps through the night, so I can't promise to do anything about 3am spam.
    5. I am not cool.

Seeing all I'd be doing is killing spam, I imagine none of the downsides of choo-choo-choosing me are all that relevant.

    Please Mod! Kill the Spam!
  1.
I was hoping whispering the spammer every minute or so would slow them down, but it doesn't seem to be working. If only I had the power of grey skull.

you were five minutes late for that ride I left three minutes late for that one time. I dont know if you can have my vote.ascott430 - "Was going to build it up into a fixed gear until I realized I'd rather spend money and time on mountain bikes."
  2.
That is a fair point, should probably be added to downsides.

Nothing will fix an issue like this without a basic application process for the forum, and unfortunately that's never going to happen.
  3.
Fair enough... I've never been that clear on how much power mods have under this system. Probably much less than I think (when I was a mod we had to rely on the admin to really deal with troublemakers, he was a crafty guy).

I take it you did something to the spam from last night though? Or maybe I imagined it went away.

Truth be told if having other mods to help you would be of use, any number of people who've been mentioned would likely get my vote, if there was such a vote. No telling who will abuse "the power" (particularly when inebriated).
  4.
    I am opposed to Cheez as mod for the following reason;

(Play some scary music in your head while reading this)

    (1) Questions linger about his citizenship. Has anyone seen the long-form birth certificate?

    (2) He has leaked top-secret information about how he would deal with spamers for political gain. The BFG-Seals assault team may have been use in the past to take out spammers, but now the Spammers are aware of that. Our national insecurity has been compromised. Ask yourself, do you really feel safe at night?

    (3) Cheez has a 1-year old child at his house that he takes care of. CLEARLY this means that he supports the idea of a "welfare state" where infants suck on the government "nipple."

    (4) He says he "hates spam." Do we really want a leader who has such extreme social positions, and freely uses hate speech?

    (5) He states that, "...obviously have no problem with people calling me out for being a jerk." How are we supposed to engage in meaningless political banter with agreeable pundits? Is the America we really want to hand down to our children?

    (6) "Did I mention I look at Bfixed a lot? It's a disease." He self-admits that he has a disease, could die at any moment, and would leave the position vacant. He hasn't even named a running mate yet. The Washington Post reports an unnamed source that Cheez is, "...considering some strange, former governess, from Alaska with strong anti-bike tendencies."All you white kids look alike when you're still covered in baby fat, so I was getting bored with the non-stop WASP parade.
  5.
Don't buy into the socialist agenda!

I will hold a press conference this evening after everyone's gone to bed (that means you Babyfries) to answer these baseless accusations.

    Also, I haz celebrity endorsements.

You can't trust anyone who's up every few hours hitting the bottle. I trust that disqualifies all of my opponents.

Unfortunately he is far too level-headed and sensible, clearly he isn't willing to sign on to the "stay for the insults" pledge.

If American history has taught us anything, it's that dependence on the bottle never disqualifies someone from running things.

Err...anyway. No, Tim, we don't have a lot of useful power. We can sticky, unsticky, edit or delete comments and threads, and ban users. Under the request of the forum host brandonc, we aren't supposed to ban users unless they're spammers or tamper with content unless asked to (changing dates in thread titles, user requests their own comment be removed).

It's possible that when I ban a user (which I did when I saw the spammer last night) it deletes all recently posted comments by that user for non-mod accounts. Otherwise, Eric did the very tedious process of going into all the threads and manually deleting comments. I tried to delete them out of the relevant threads that were on the front page but didn't bother to delete them out of every thread.
  11.
Ah, I keep forgetting that Eric also has mod powers (although last night it occurred to me that he might still have "THE POWER" so I'm not sure forgetting is quite the right term).

ratattack:Under the request of the forum host brandonc, we aren't supposed to ban users unless they're spammers or tamper with content unless asked to (changing dates in thread titles, user requests their own comment be removed).

That's what I meant when I said I signed on to your approach to modding.

Clearly you and Eric would know better than the rest of us, wasn't sure whether it would be helpful to have a third mod to help catch the spamming early (although as you said banning them isn't very effective if they'll just sign-up under a different username). From my time as a mod I know it can sometimes be not that much fun... although hopefully I'm right in thinking spam is only a problem here from time to time.

Obviously we (the non-mods) could also all just sit tight, let the spammer have their way with the forums, and then just bump the threads that actually get used on a regular basis. But what would the fun be of not going all Chicken Little?

The forum is falling! Ack,run for your lives!!!

For whatever it's worth, if we really need a new mod, which it seems like we don't, I think papafries is the best candidate. He didn't nominate himself, much like our very honorable first President."Dude's just smashing fructosenormativity, lay off."

Seriously, I do think a third mod would help alleviate the pressure for the other two mods, and I think he's down with Lauren's low-impact modding policy. And Papafries has been an active member forever without ever having a temper tantrum or stepping on anybody's toes. He's probably the best person here I can think of.Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)

Uh... yeah. I don't know that either of your criteria are all that relevant (and I'm not only referring to myself). The problem in the past, after all, was mods who took it upon themselves to start editing people's posts because they didn't like the content, and it wasn't necessarily only content aimed at them. Our current "problem" if you'd go so far as to call it that is having mods that're online to catch spam before it gets out of control (which in my mind suggests we could stand to have two other mods, I have to say Chris also seems to often be online in the middle of the night). Clearly Eric and Lauren have been doing an awesome job, but they aren't chained to their computers.

Anyway, obviously Surprisefries would be an excellent choice (but truth be told Alexi is ok by me, or Conor, can't remember who else seriously nominated themselves).

A long history of rational behavior as a contributing member would most likely translate into rational behavior as a mod. That's my main point.Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree on that point.

Oh, I'd be bad all right!

But yeah, Surprisefries would be great, as would Chris.

Truth be told as much as I claimed I wasn't kidding, I was pretty much kidding. Can I still post my not-very-good meme endorsement from Willie Wonka?

But seriously folks. Fourth spammer in 3 days. Can't we add, like, one or two more mods for swift kill action?Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)

For the record, I'd be one of the least likely ever people to use mod powers for fucking with people or deleting/editing their posts. It would have to be pretty ugly before I would even consider it.

I'm not convinced we really need more modz, especially considering the contraction was so recent. I think the spamming will die off before too long. But like I said if Lauren and Eric want some help I'd be happy to.DFL and DTF :D:D:D:D
