An alley cat style race with cyclocross check points so be prepared to get wet and muddy.

    Registration is at Bloc 11 @ 10AM.

The race is creepin up soon. Weather is looking good; hope everyone is getting pumped. So to give you guys some extra motivation to race, I figured I would tell you whats up for grabs.

First is Cash Money! The Registration is 5 bucks. First place over all and First Girl will get to split the pot of registration money, so the more people you get to race the more money is up for grabs.

Second is Firefly is making an awesome trophy for first place overall. I have not seen it yet but i'm sure its gonna be rad. Get all the street cred with this trophy on your mantel.

Third all racers will receive 1 NFATHF LED spoke card made by Andrew Muro of buzzword and Julien Roundtree. Yes a spoke card with fucking lights.

So the prize break down is as follows

    1st Overall
Cash, Trophy, AARN chain ring, Cuppow product kit and an assorted Tshirt and bottle bag

    1st Girl
Cash, AARN chain ring, Cuppow product kit and an assorted Tshirt and bottle bag

    2nd overall
50 dollar gift certificate for labor to Somervelo, 1lb of Boston common coffee house blend, 1 pair of vittoria tires and an assorted Tshirt and bottle bag

    3rd overall
1lb of Boston common coffee house blend, 1 pair of vittoria tires and an assorted Tshirt and bottle bag

Also Note if 1st girl and 1st overall are the same person they will get all the money and the extra chain ring will go to the second place winner

I hope you all are as stoked as I am about this so tell your friends and I hope to see you all out there!

Looks like a great race! Honest question though, how many times has first "girl" been first "overall"? Where's the little boy's race? I liked all the recent races with equal categories... Will race anyway, or help with a checkpoint because cross check points sound like a lot of work. (I don't really need an answer to that question, I get it)"life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

While I think most would agree that it's important to have separate prize categories to encourage non-male racers to participate in alleycats, the "first girl" business is fucked up. In the world of sport, female athletes' accomplishments get overshadowed by their male counterparts (duh) and they have to compete not only against each other but against shitty attitudes and and the normalized idea that ladies can't do sports. Calling women who are breaking this down "girls" is backwards and misogynist. How many times have you heard "you run/throw/ride/etc like a girl"?

tldr; why the fuck is "fist girl" still an accepted thing? what's wrong with "first non-male" or "first woman"

Sure it's possible, but it's still not fair or happens frequently, and doesn't give other racers much incentive to reg."life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

"first non-T doper" or even just 3 places, like the probably-only-dude category. Maybe if the playing field is equal for more than a couple races every year, more women will be encouraged to race, and organizers will get more entry fees, everyone will be happy, etc."life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

There are other ways to get women to participate in events than having gender-specific prize categories, which is a lure for two or three women maybe but not many more it seems. The Sadie Hawkins races in Chicago got a lot of women participating. Or what about non-speed prize categories? The Katamari Cat had a large female turnout without any women-specific prizes (at least, I don't remember any). Instead there were prizes for creativity and uniqueness as well as prizes for speed and strength...Worstcase I'll just zip tie on a seat... but i'd rather not. —Zev (who else)

Yeah the prize thing is kinda dumb. If you wanna race for money or schwag work your way up to a uci license. At the last race I helped out with the organizers were obsessed with approval from the sponsors, who see these events as nearly free advertising. Winning, rather than having fun, seems to have been the focus of the races of late.

Look at the DIY music scene, there are basement shows that I hear about at least weekly and turnout is usually good. Why can't we have a similar draw, do we actually need the promise of a set of glow in the dark deep vs to get motivated to attend a bike event?

^truf. race for your inner swag.
  6.
Sadly I haven't been to a race in a while, but I always enjoyed the ones with a raffle at the afterparty. Still get schwag, sponsors get their free advertising, but it's not as winning-focused, at least in terms of getting stuff. And the raffle money can get donated somewhere good.DFL and DTF :D:D:D:D
  7.
Even if you kept some kind of cash prize (presumably encourages more competitive people to show up?) I do like the idea of a raffle for other tangible prizes, maybe a free entry with race entry? Money from additional raffle tix to a charity?

I hate it when shit is gender-segreated.
That said, I'll probably race despite my lack of a CX bike. I'll probably bring my Fuji Touring III cuz its a pretty stable platform with wide-ish tires, just need to decide whether I'll run it fixed or SS. I mean, how off-road can you get in Boston-ish?
  8.
I would probably go with SS to be on the safe side? If they make use of any of the popular cyclocross-y stuff in close-in burbs it might easily get a little rough for fixed (thinking Fells, Cutler, Boulder Brook, etc). Seeing it starts in Somerville it wouldn't be surprising if they at least hit the Fells and Boulder Brook. Sounds like a decent bike to do it on though.

Not to hijack this thread, and I'm sure there's a more appropriate place to post this, but it's relevant to the whole "rolling bike party vs win the alleycat" mentality. When the days are warmer we should have a rolling bike party brewery crawl/ride. Below is a list of breweries reasonably close together in the greater boston area that offer tastings around the same hours. Perhaps if I or someone else (or both!) coordinated such a thing and a lot of people were down for it, the breweries would consider even hosting either tours/tasting tents/whatever specifically for us or make it a legit ride. 'cept the whole possibility of drunk biking thing, unless we cap it at 1 beer per stop or something else creative. Maybe slightly ageist bc it'd have to be 21+ but I was wondering what the reception to such a thing might be. LIST AS FOLLOWS:

About an hour and a half, 12 people total, I think 6 check points, spoke cards are sick. The check point people took a lot of photos, so I hope we see them at some point. Was sad I came in a close second, but then I realized there were only 2 of us. Come out to races, you all missed out! It was a perfect day, loads of fun."life is hard, cats are soft." - surprisefries

Yep, I had fun. Though I'd still rather be made to chug beers and do moke snaps and stuff at checkpoints, it was a good excuse to get out and ride my CX biek. You said time was infinite, so why the watch wrapped around your wrist?
