I rattle canned my bike, and unlike previous rattle canned bikes this paint job is not sticking... the paint chips off soo easily..

I used rust-o-liem (sp?) primer, paint, and clear coat.. allowed 10-15 min between coats (can said wait "a few minutes"), it's been like 3 days since I painted it and it's like it still hasn't hardened or dried yet? I put in my bathroom with a space heater and dehumidifer to try'n make it extra dry but no luck...

    any suggestions?

karyatid - you still planning a painting day?!?

    Yo, Morgan.

You bet your ass I am. I had to hold off b/c my friend in Allston decided he didn't want a spray booth in his garage and it's getting too cold to paint outside and have it set right. So, I'm waiting on another friend of mine who rents warehouse space in Everett to get his air compressor in (I'm helping him set up his spray booth in exchange for using it). If you can wait on me, I'd say to buy some automotive primer and paint. It should run you about $30 for one color? I have more than enough clear-coat.

I'm thinking I could just use the rattle can primer and paint I have cus I love the color... then super clear coat it with your fancy clear coat

If I had to guess, though, y0, the soft chipping off is the rattle-can primer and paint not really sticking to anything.

Maybe try spray-on rattle-can automotive primer as opposed to rustoleum? and give it a good few hours to dry between repeat coats? and layer it on light? Then fancy clear coat?

'Cause I'm not sure that putting good clear-coat down on bad paint would actually help you any if the paint itself isn't bonding well.

most of the time your suppose to wait to apply more coats if its the same thing like the primer or the base then you can keep applying coats. you should wait till each layer dries and then sand in between layers with 200 grit just to make the paint have some tooth to it so it has somthing to stick to. even clear coats can be wiped down with a 300 grit which will all appear smooth once you apply the final clear coatEverybody was saying we must have more leisure. ok so I've got the feeling I painted well it was to cold... is there anything I can do now to help? will baking it somewhere now help?
  1.
its possible that the paint went bad in the can. High quality paints have a shelf life and then they just dont stick. Lower quality spray paints are more susceptable to this and id bet thats part of the problem, expecially if the paint was opened before this job. It could also be incompletely mixed paint, from either being cold when you mixed it or not mixing long enough. also if you painted it outside and the metal was cold some of the solvents could have been trapped under the surface that are now allowing the top layer of paint to chip off.

BTW; whenever painting weekend happens im still down to help.im the mad midnight bomber what bombs at midnigh! yeah baby yeah!
  2.
is this painting exclusive to you guys or could someone else--me--get in on it?You're purposefully attempting to sabotage my degree project. Thanks.

Given that I barely know anyone IRL, it's not even remotely exclusive. I think there's probably a limit to the welcome I have at my friend's warehouse, though. At least for the winter.

y0, Seth. How many bikes do you think one could paint/clearcoat in a day (no decals) with one setup? 3? 5?

Oil based rustoleum? Should wait a bit longer than 15 minutes. Shit is also very brittle compared to automotive paint, etc. (old graff head speaking. I hate rusto.)

Also, I'm tottalllly in need of a new paint job. Let me know if/when there is going to be a gravity fed paint party. I'll probably be purchasing a nice orange paint if I get it painted then. considering getting a powder coat though. either way, keep me in mind

I think survey says you have to strip that back down to metal. I have some methylene chloride gel you can have (left over from stripping a floor).

the reason why it chipped off if because you used rusto. rusto krylon ect is a waterbased pigment, and its not super thick. buy some montana spray paint that aerosol artists use, that shit is super thick and coats very wellride bikes for money not for fun(unless your drunk)

How are you applying the paint? I found that keeping you're finger on the nozzle is paint and wastes the paint and adds a thick uneven coat.
Try swinging from side to side and releasing the nozzle every time you swing from one side to the other. Leaves thinner layers, won't drip and you'll get better use from the paint.

    ok. just checking.
When I rattlecanned, the paint didn't really harden for like a week or two. For like the first week it felt like everything would chip the paint.

there are a few different types montana makes and they come in a vast range of colors and shades. the garage can be anywhere from like 5.75-7.85 a can. blick is defnitly expensive and the garage is strickly a graff/clothing shop so youd be better off going there, plus the owner kerry is a super nice dude and is a huge supporter of the HELL-metsride bikes for money not for fun(unless your drunk)
