Playing polo on Washington feels very suburban to me. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere. We went on a ride and found some great courts in the North End, Cambridge, East Boston - I'd like to play somewhere where it feels like we actually play in a city or perhaps just some place a little grittier. If anyone wants to cruise around this Saturday to look at courts with me, hit m up.

just to say - i'll be much more likely to attend if the court was closer to downtown. riding my polo bike from downtown to allston sucks.

-The crack courts on kneeland street are pretty good if you want a city feeling. There are no walls, just a curb that the ball will jump a lot, but a fence to keep it from going in the street. we used to play there in summer 2006.
-There is another street hockey court that is fenced ON Charles and fulkerson in east cambridge. no lights for night time polo
-I spotted a basketball court between columbus and st botolph on west newton in the south end that looks worth checking out.
long address but here are the 3 locations.

we're just having to compete with the roller hockey dudes at the western ave. court more and more.

somerville is sweet but i know some people come from jp and thats a haul on a polo bike..

the one on charles street in e. cambridge looks promising and it's pretty central.
chinatown is doable but i'd really rather find something better.

i know kat said she had found like every roller hockey court in the city and posted it on google maps? wanna link us that jon?I'm going to eat your brain and gain your knowledge

the crackheads don't really interfere. They fucking love watching. If no one showed up one week they would ask why no one was there the next time people played. There was some asian volleyball league going on there, so the games got moved to the winthrop square parking garage.

Did it get condemned/closed? I know the guy that ones the two adjacent buildings tried buying it so another developer couldn't build something there.

the garage is owned by the city, like most of the parking facilities downtown. the old company that managed it lost their lease on the space, so a new one took over. they still say that they're going to knock it down and build an 80 story high rise on the square though, so i assume this new company's lease is shorter.

I just looked up a few articles on this since I haven't seen this stuff in the papers in months. The city planned on selling it, but I guess they want the garage open. bidding for the to operate the garage ended in July for a one year lease.
"A BRA spokeswoman said an operator would be selected by July 1[2007] and would share revenue with the city under a one-year contract, with options to renew for three more years while Belkin develops plans."
Belkin owns a few buildings downtown.

yeah, the new company that runs the garage won't let us use the bathroom, and charge twice as much for parking as the old company.

yeah, the point is to make it more central instead of chilling in the suburbs.
yup, i did make a map of all the hockey courts in the area. (this is kat, i'm using jon's login) we basically have three hockey court options that are more central - two in cambridge by the river and one in the north end. i'd like to check out the north end spot, but i'm sure that will be something we have to fight for in nice weather. here's the map:

View Larger Map (grr, can't seem to get the map to embed, so click this link until i figure this out)

exactly my point, the rest of us don't love going all the way to allston on polo bikes. that's why we're looking for someplace more central.

the delfillipio court is pretty tiny, but it's in good condition. no walls just fences and square corners.
There is also a b-ball court right next to it that's a tiny bit bigger..

but i dont know.. i'm pretty sure i could score half the time from across court, which might make games a little silly.. or just make us play with goalies at all times..

hmmm, i'd like to hear what the other regulars think..le gus? phillip? tyler?I'm going to eat your brain and gain your knowledge

the reason i chose the courts in allston is because they are not basketball courts, so the only competition we have are the hockey guys, if we try to play on bball courts that people have been playing on forever and take their playing time on the weekends they will be pretty pissed and since the numbers at polo have been dwindling we dont have presence like they do in new york. however if anyone has a better location i am all ears. and john, maybe we can get some cardboard and build a skyline on the side of the court to make it feel more urban, maybe even throw some needles and crack pipes in the court to give it that "edge".

the north end one looks good the only problem with the courts in dense city areas have way more people trying to use them. granted, i dont mind telling a 7 year old learning to ride their bike on the court to fuck off so we can play polo but that might rub some people the wrong way.

yeah, it might be cool to try another spot for a while just to get a change of scenery and perhaps accommodate people who rather not have to ride out to alston or wherevers..

the north end court is in way better condition than the chinatown court, so we could try there and then if worst came to worst we could go over to chinatown..

but yeah it's gonna be shitty on sunday so we should play on saturday..I'm going to eat your brain and gain your knowledge

psh kids on bikes get invited to play... hockey players on the other hand...

The delfillipo/northend one could work/decent distance for me. I do like the wooden walls that we've got now however, and especially the rounded corners...

Any of the allston courts and the northend could work though i suppose... The colombus park location looks similar to what we've got now, but that'd be about the same haul as to allston for me, and much more for most of 'ya I'd think. (however its a nice location, oceanic'n whatnot)

We playin tonight if the rain lets up? Also, where's a good place to get a ball? (citysports?)legit bike polo... a gusly entity of delicious. Mallets'n wheelcovers.

i also like the current court- the walls and angled corners keep the game fast, and make it easy to spectate without risking life and limb. Also, since it's out of sight of the road or houses, people can drink a beer or whatever without anyone complaining.Troglodytarum is latin for troll

Tyler, I hate you. You've driven me to shoot heroin with all your condescending remarks. Maybe next time we play in Allston your mom can bake us some cookies and then we can go on a 5 mile fun run for breast cancer. Fuck you!

P.S. I don't hate you. Ask Mrs. Sage if I can spend the night.
