    yeah, dannymac dabbled in "pure" trials for a minute, but what he's doing now is really it's own thing. a couple years ago british street-trials riders began borrowing from bmx to really forge their own style and with that came evolution into a special breed of 24" wheeled bikes with modified trials geometry, while maintaining a more traditional look (a seat). what you see above isn't really regarded as trials to a competition rider (which is where the sport originated from; mototrials). watching the innovation and technical skill of street riders like these is more impressive to more people than anything done in competition and that is why you are more likely to see stuff like this tagged as trials on the internet.

    'observed mountain bike trials' usually happens on natural terrain (except for world class competition) and is basically the art of negotiating obstacles without incurring penalties for placing a foot down or in some cases making contact with any part of the bicycle besides the rubber (there are exceptions based on what governing body is holding the competition: BIU= pedal and bash guard allowed UCI= nothing but rubber) in the event that 2 riders make it through a section without penalty the fastest time wins. It is the red headed step child of bicycling to the UCI, and a sport completely dominated by Europeans. america has not produced anyone even remotely close to being able to hang on a world class level since the inception of the sport, that's why nobody here could give a fuck. to put it in perspective: picture coverage and following of cycling vs. basketball, football, baseball and that is what trials riding is to cycling, 1% of 1%.

    I like it because it combines precision, balance and explosive power to overcome an obstacle through bike handling skill. Just like any other form of cycling, techniques learned will improve your overall ability as a cyclist, not to mention the dedication it takes to learn even the most basic of maneuvers. yes extremely geeky, perhaps even gayer than aids.

    I dunno, that sounds bitchin' to me. Considering the bikes that most of you ride, there is no reason one's whip should conform specifically to a cycling discipline. I mean, I'm pretty much much of a purist, but I have to hand it to anyone with a particular vision that is well executed. As much as I hate the whole BMX fixi thing, some of you all have sweet fucking rides.

    Let's take Jesse's Geekhouse for example, the most beautiful monstrosity in Boston. I love it.

    no no no, eric. that bighit is still a man's bike. girls don't ride serious trail bikes. and it's birds and power lines, so it's okay.

    the butterflies are on the myka. that's a ladies bike.


    honestly, though, i'm not a downhiller at heart but i'd still love either of those bikes to bomb around on. i think i would have enjoyed the threshold trail at highland a lot more if i had that kind of travel. i rode a demo 8 at plattekill and it was so nice. even though i hadn't pre-rode the course before my race and the whole time i feared for my life...

    aw shit, i didn't know they actually had a butterfly graphic haha.. it's really the curvy downtube that begs for streamers on the handlebars imo. no offense meant on the girly bike thing, actually I would be psyched to be ripping it up on either of those specialized but omg look at the headtube on the bighit, that's the real reason it belongs here.oppinions like kittens
